Stop, Drop, and Learn: Fire Safety Week with Our Local Heroes
Hello friends,
This Fire Safety Week, October 6–10, 2025, is going to be educating and exciting at The Melbourne Preschool, because we’re welcoming our local fire department for a special visit! Our students will get to hear from real firefighters, explore the fire truck up close, and learn how to stay safe. It’s one of our favorite hands-on learning experiences each year!
Fire Safety Week
Fire safety education is important for all ages- including young preschool-aged children. Research has shown that adapting fire safety protocols and education to a preschool curriculum by using props, like miniature fire stations, child-size gear, puppets, and storytelling, helps support learning in a developmentally appropriate and accessible way. Studies by the National Fire Protection Association have shown that teaching preschoolers about fire prevention and safe behavior can help reduce risk and build lasting lifelong safety habits.
Lessons we are covering this fire safety week include:
“Stop, Drop & Roll” – what to do if clothing catches fire
Go low under smoke (crawling on hands and knees, keeping heads low)
Don’t touch matches or lighters—always tell a grown-up
Recognize firefighters as helpers (they look different in gear!)
Practice a safe exit plan — knowing two ways out during a fire drill
What’s Happening Locally
Brevard County’s Fire Rescue observes “Fire Prevention Week” each year, joining national efforts to promote fire safety awareness. This year’s national theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home”—reminding everyone to use, charge, and recycle batteries responsibly, because those can be fire hazards if misused. An especially important message for us parents- as we seem to be constantly switching and recharging batteries!
What We’re Up To This Week
Meet our local firefighters
Fire safety education workshop
Tour a real fire truck and see how it works
Practice fire safety drills (with guidance from teachers)
Use fun songs, dress-up, and circle time and story time to explore our safety lessons
Fun firetruck and safety themed crafts
With our hands-on learning activities including a visit from our local firefighters, firetruck, we hope to help children feel empowered and confident to know what to do if a fire ever happens.
Stay safe friends, and let’s make this Fire Safety Week a meaningful adventure!
Toodleoo! 🚒
